Areas of Practice

Hip Surgery

Dr de Hoog performs total hip replacement using the direct anterior approach (DAA) - a muscle-sparing technique that avoids cutting the major hip muscles, reducing dislocation risk and supporting faster recovery. He uses robotic assistance (Stryker Mako) for implant positioning where indicated, and applies an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol to optimise the perioperative experience.

Hip resurfacing is also performed for suitable younger patients.

Knee Surgery

Dr de Hoog performs total knee replacement using the ROSA robotic system (Zimmer Biomet). Robotic assistance enables precise, reproducible implant positioning based on each patient’s individual anatomy. He favours cementless fixation in appropriate patients. The patella is not routinely resurfaced.

Hand and Wrist Surgery

Dr de Hoog provides surgical and non-surgical management of a wide range of hand and wrist conditions from the Aspire Orthopaedics rooms in North Ward, including:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Trigger finger and Dupuytren’s disease
  • Thumb base (CMC) arthritis
  • Wrist ligament and cartilage injuries (TFCC, scapholunate ligament)
  • Wrist arthroscopy
  • Wrist, MCP, PIP joint replacement
  • Fractures of the distal radius, scaphoid, hand and fingers
  • Tendon and nerve injuries
  • Ganglion excision

NQ Hand Care Clinic has on-site hand therapists, and a plaster technician. All at the same North Ward location, enabling coordinated care for hand and wrist patients.

NQ Hand Care Clinic

NQ Hand Care Clinic (NQHCC) is a specialist hand and wrist clinic in North Ward, Townsville.

Aspire Orthopaedics shares the same premises, and the two clinics work in close clinical integration. Dr de Hoog manages the surgical side of hand, wrist, and upper limb care through Aspire Orthopaedics; where injuries are better managed conservatively, patients are treated by the NQHCC’s team, with consultation from Dr de Hoog. The referral relationship runs in both directions.

All new patients are seen at the consulting rooms at 13 Warburton Street, North Ward.
